The Ultimate Fighting Championship has just slapped a bow on yet another PPV that featured Phil Davis working a win over former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and featherweight champ Jose Aldo emerging triumphant over Chan Sung Jung in the night’s main attraction. The win vaults Phil Davis into the discussion for the next contender for the light heavyweight, while the win for Aldo marks yet another in a largely successful career that has seen him rise as Brazil’s current best fighter with former middleweight champ Anderson Silva coming off a shocking defeat. The event also starts a slew of upcoming fight cards that are set to air in the month of August with many of them having title implications in several divisions and one actually being a title fight.
Coming in the next few weeks is UFC’s debut on Fox Sports 1. The main event of the card will feature a light heavyweight clash between former champ Shogun Rua and the famously opinionated Chael Sonnen. The bout could have future implications for a title fight in the immediate future as Rua looks to reestablish himself in the division while Sonnen looks to snap a losing streak. The Boston event will also feature the much awaited return of Alistair Overeem as he looks to get back on the winning track against young up and comer Travis Browne in a heavyweight bout.
Following UFC’s maiden voyage on its new network will be yet another Fox Sports 1 vehicle that will this time feature a welterweight clash as its main attraction. After close defeats to Georges St. Pierre and Johny Hendricks, the respective champ and number one contender in his own division, Condit looks to get back to his winning ways as he takes on resident tough guy Martin Kampmann. Also included on the card is a lightweight battle between striker extraordinaire Donald Cerrone and the fast-rising Brazilian Rafael Dos Anjos.
Before the month ends, UFC also plans to send one last August treat to its audience as it features light heavyweight champion Ben Henderson squaring off in a five round title fight against Anthony “Showtime??? Pettis. It marks the first fight between the two since their historic and exciting clash in the now defunct WEC and if their past encounter is any indication, then their upcoming fight should be another barnburner. The Henderson and Pettis encounter is not the only reason to sign up for this PPV as the event will also feature a big time bout between the heavyweights Frank Mir and Josh Barnett.
August is set to be a terrific month for the UFC and they’ve gotten off to a good start with yet another raucous and fantastic event in Rio. With nothing but great fights set to air over the next few weeks, the UFC is giving its audience one last dose of summer blockbusters to send them into the fall and winter months craving only more of the finest octagon action that the UFC has to offer.
