Can the Bone Thugs N’ Harmony Stand the Test of Time?

From the early part of the 90s up to the present, Bone Thugs N Harmony have shown that they can beat the odds when it comes to longevity of Hip Hop groups, especially since the passing of the years have introduced a whole new group of performers. However, recent events would have one thinking that it might not be the case.

Bone Thugs N’ Harmony first came into the music scene in the 90s as The Band Aid Boys. They were able to form a group called the BONE Enterpri$e which was made up of Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone and, later, Flesh-n-Bone. By the middle of the 90s, when they were already known as Bone Thugs N’ Harmony, the group was able to release an album with the title, E. 1999 Eternal. This was actually their second album with their first carrying the popular track “Thuggish Ruggish Bone”. The second album was considered to be a commercial success and included such tracks as “East 1999”. The album also contained the Grammy Award winner, “Crossroads” which was dedicated to Eazy-E.

The group was able to release a few more albums including “The Art of War”, “BTNHResurrection”, and “Uni 5: The world’s Enemy”. Some of the other tracks that the group has made popular include, “Breakdown” which they sang with Mariah Carey, “If I Could Teach the World”, “Thug Luv” which they performed with Tupac Shakur, and “Change the World”.

While in 2012, Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone were rumored to have left the group, the two denied this although they admitted to being in a state of mind where they do not see any way to move forward. This led to a reunion album which they released in the same year. However, by 2013, Layzie Bone had already announced his desire to focus on his solo career. For the more avid fans, the fear that the group could disband anytime was resurrected. Layzie Bone’s intention was to finish any contractual obligations he might have and then break away from the group. However, when the album Art of War III was released during the latter part of the said year, it was not Layzie Bone who was missing from the vocals but it was Wish Bone. Krayzie Bone had admitted that, in their last album, it was only him, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, and Flesh Bone who had performed in all of the tracks.

As 2014 ushered in a new year, fans who had feared that Layzie Bone would no longer be performing with the group were surprised to see him performing during BTNH’s second concert in the Philippines in support of the Typhoon Haiyan victims. With him still keeping it up with the other members of the group, it seems the fans could allay their fears for now and enjoy more of the music that Layzie Bone is making with his brothers. For now, the group is still the one to beat when it comes to longevity and popularity in the rap scene.
