Chicago Cubs Look to Improve, Adds Four Minor League Players to the Roster

There are two professional teams from Chicago in the Major League Baseball. One is in the American League, the White Sox, while the other one is in the National League, the Cubs. The Cubs have been World Series champions twice when they won back-to-back in 1907 and 1908. This 103 year drought of not being crowned champions is the longest in any major North American professional sports team. With the championship eluding them for more than 10 decades, holders of Chicago Cubs tickets for the 2012 season is looking for a better showing from their team.

Chicago Cubs finished last season with a 71-91 record which is fourth in the Central Division. Playing at Wrigley Field, they were 39-42 while on the road, they were 32-49. The Cubs record was 14th in the National League. During the 2010 season, they had a 75-87 record in the regular season which was 13th in the league. With this dismal record in the past two seasons, owners of Chicago Cubs tickets, still never fails to support their team.

The Cubs was at the middle of the pack when it came to team batting statistics in 2011. They were 18th overall in runs (654), 13th in batting average (.256), 20th in on base percentage (.314) and 15th in slugging percentage (.401). On the pitching side, however, they were at the bottom 10 of the entire MLB. Chicago Cubs was 25th in earned run average or ERA (4.33), 26th in quality starts (76), 25th in walks plus hits per inning pitched (1.41) and 22nd in batting against average (.262).

This current MLB offseason has been used by the Cubs to fill up their roster with players they think could help in next year’s campaign. Just this month, they added four players to their 40-man roster. It includes left-handed pitcher Jeff Beliveau, infielders Junior Lake and Josh Vitters and outfielder Matt Szczur. The Cubs still has six players needed to complete their roster.

Beliveau was named the Cubs 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year while playing for the Double-A Tennessee. He was also part of Team USA last fall. Lake was named as the 2011 Arizona Fall League Rising Star while playing for Tennessee. According to Baseball America, Lake is the eighth best prospect for the Cubs.

Vitters is currently one ranking below Lake in the prospect lists and also played for the Tennessee minor team. Szczur, on the other hand, is the third best prospect in the Cubs system and became a mid-season Midwest League All-Star. He played previously for Single-A Daytona.

Before they open their regular season against the Washington Nationals on April 5, they would be able to test their team during the 35-game Spring Training. They would play 17 road games in Arizona, 16 home games at the HoHoKam Park and two games at Las Vegas. The home game tickets would be on sale on January 5.

After the games versus Washington, they would face the Milwaukee Brewers on April 9. Their first road games would be a tough one. They would have to go up against the defending World Series champs, the St. Louis Cardinals.
