Music groups may come and go, but for the most dedicated of fans, the Four Seasons are forever. Though the name may fly over the heads of most youngsters, much of today’s pop music can barely hold a candle to the hit songs of Frankie Valli and friends. The band has since become the central focus of the surprise hit of the theater scene, with Jersey Boystickets being among the hottest-selling tickets in town.
Debuting at Broadway in 2005, Jersey Boys is a documentary and jukebox musical rolled into one. Following the meteoric rise and fall of the Four Seasons, the show stands to become another timeless chronicle of the perks and pitfalls of fame. The plot structure of Jersey Boyscomprises four distinct “seasons???, each one narrated by a different member of the band. Act One covers Spring and Summer, documenting the band’s formation and slow climb up the ladder of fame. Act Two covers Fall and Winter, depicting the events that would lead to the band’s success, implosion, and their final reunion on the stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Far from being a bright and sunny account of the Four Seasons’ success, Jersey Boys makes bold artistic decisions in walking audiences through some of the most pivotal moments in the band’s history. The first season of the play, Spring, follows the band’s roots in New Jersey. A young Tommy DeVito has just started a band with brother Nick and school friend Nick Massi. Tommy would later discover and nurture Frankie Castelluccio, who would later morph into the Four Seasons frontman Frankie Valli. It is the addition of talented singer-songwriter Bob Gaudio, however, that would mark the true beginning of the band’s tumultuous journey to the top of the charts.
Jersey Boys abounds with all the hallmarks of a life filled with fame, intrigue and rock ‘n’ roll. Interspersed between the Four Seasons classics are tales of heartbreak, prison, run-ins with the mob and other personal tragedies culminating in the band’s eventual falling-out.
Living up to its status as a jukebox musical, Jersey Boys is a veritable nostalgia trip for most veterans of the 1960s rock and roll scene. The show takes people back to the heyday of the Four Seasons, showcasing a handpicked selection of their greatest hits. The show has earned distinction from Broadway Cares as one of the most prolific tour fundraisers two years in a row. Jersey Boys has also pledged its support to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, dedicated to improving music education at public school programs across the country. Meanwhile, the West End cast of Jersey Boys has taken part in a number of shows benefiting groups such as Children In Need and the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund.
