The grandest stage of professional wrestling is set to show yet again this coming April 7, and this time the annual spectacle known as Wrestlemania makes its return to the New York/ New Jersey Area. MetLife Stadium is the venue of choice for the 29th edition of the WWE’s signature event. It will yet again feature the brightest stars of this current wrestling generation, while simultaneously paying tribute to some of the legends of yesteryear. Wrestlemania has always proven to be quite the crowd-pleaser, and this year’s event figures to be no different.
Headlining the event is the match for the WWE title between the challenger John Cena and the champion, The Rock. The Rock won the WWE title back at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view when he defeated then champion CM Punk. He has since defended the title at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view and is now set to defend the title against Cena. The road to the main event has been similarly treacherous for Cena. After a year in which he failed to lay his hands upon the WWE title, Cena got 2013 off to a great start when he captured the victory at the Royal Rumble’s eponymous match. The victory secured Cena a place in the title match, and for now it seems as though he is lined up to earn a rematch with The Rock.
Another world title is on the line at Wrestlemania 29 as World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio is set to defend his title against Jack Swagger. Del Rio captured the World Heavyweight Championship earlier this year when he defeated the Big Show in a Last Man Standing match. The win propelled Del Rio to become one of the WWE’s biggest draws, and it has so far been a very smooth transition for him. Del Rio is set to share the grand stage of Wrestlemania against his opponent, Jack Swagger. Swagger is a former World Heavyweight Champion himself, but after a lengthy slump caused him to take a break late in 2012, he has since returned with a new vigor, laying out enemies left and right. He is currently being managed by Zeb Colter, an outspoken so-called “real American??? who has seen it fit to provide his views about the state of immigration in the United States. The match serves as the perfect encounter between cultural hero and social pariah, and the two will meet in the middle of the ring on April 7.
Several other big names are being rumored to appear on the Wrestlemania card. Brock Lesnar has been on television more frequently in recent weeks and he is rumored to be lined up for a match with WWE Triple H. The encounter will be a rematch for the two as they have previously shared the squared circle back in the summer of 2012. A few more superstars that are rumored to be part of the Wrestlemania card include Daniel Bryan, Kane, Sheamus, Chris Jericho, and even the group collectively known as The Shield. Wrestlemania 29 is promising to be yet another spectacular event.
