The Uncertain Future of Baseball’s Evil Empire

Baseball’s Evil Empire is just now starting to show its age. After years and years of making trips to the postseason, the New York Yankees are looking more and more like a team that has been bypassed in the baseball hierarchy. The team that is famous for its utter disregard for fiscal responsibility is now making a point to tighten its belt, and it could not have come at a worse time, since the team now is in possession of a number of lineup holes that they just cannot fill. These are still the New York Yankees however, and they could very well make it back to the postseason by the time October rolls around, but what is not disputed however, is that they will have truly earned that trip should they make it this year.

New York YankeesThe recurring theme of the spring has been injuries, and it is not just injuries to minor players, as some of the most famous names on the Yankee roster now come with injury updates listed next to their names. Prior to the start of spring, the Yankees already knew that they were going to be without the services of their expensive third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Since then however, the disabled list has only gotten longer. Down first was centerfielder Curtis Granderson. The lefty is one of the team’s better power hitters, and he is now believed to be in line to miss at least the first month of the season. Next was first baseman Mark Teixeira. The injury to Teixeira saps the Yankee lineup of another power source. His injury also deprives the team of gold glove caliber defense at first. Another notable name rumored to wind up the list of disabled Yankees is that of Derek Jeter. Jeter ended last year sprawled out on the infield as he tried to make a play on a groundball. The injury he sustained on that play ended up needing surgical repairs, and he has since failed to return to the field at a form that is anywhere near 100 percent.

Perhaps the only thing that is keeping the Yankee doomsayers from really bellowing out their proclamations is the team’s possession of a terrific pitching staff. From rotation to bullpen, the team features a list of highly capable hurlers. CC Sabathia is back at full health, and he is looking to submit another Cy Young caliber effort from the mound. The back of the bullpen is similarly anchored by another quality pitcher in Mariano Rivera. The all-time saves leader was injured early on in the 2012 season, and he is now looking to make 2013 his last and most memorable season. The lineup for all its woes is still in possession of one of the best hitters in the Majors. Robinson Cano is back to man second base, and he is looking to assume an even larger role in the team’s offense. Predictions for the Yankees are all over the map, but the only prevailing thought is that Baseball’s Evil Empire is not about to go gently into the night.
