World Series

Who will win baseball’s most coveted title this year? Post-season stalwarts the New York Yankees? The ultra-dominant Phillies? A repeat from the Giants, last year’s winner? Or maybe some new contender, some team out of left field entering the mix and making a run for the penant. Because if one thing’s for sure, it’s that nothing in this 162 game season is for sure. That goes double for the post-season. Though America’s national pasttime had earlier versions of championships, the modern World Series seems to have been conceived in 1903, when the Boston Americans and Pittsburg Pirates faced off. Boston’s Cy Young pitched the Americans, who became the Red Sox, to victory. Since then, the penant has traveled around the country. Some teams have won more than others, though. The pinstriped Yankees have, at times, seemingly had a monopoly on the trophy, winning 27 times in 40 trips – their most recent in 2009. The St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics have earned 10 and 9, respectively, followed by the Red Sox 7 (their most recent coming after a Cubs-esque drought) and the recently victorious Giants’ 6.
