A small town team making it to the big game and actually winning it in the end is unheard of anywhere outside of movie territory. There are just simply too many obstacles working against small market teams for them to realistically manage to win at the highest level, but don’t bother telling these things to the Green Bay Packers. They have routinely defied the odds in terms of exceeding their supposed limitations as a small market franchise, winning multiple Super Bowls and emerging as one of the league’s premier franchises. They have not allowed small market conditions to hinder their success in any way, and have even parlayed it into a rallying cry of sorts for them and their fans. They are the small market product making good, and they may have yet another Super Bowl run coming in the immediate future.
Green Bay’s success begins and ends with one man, and that is quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The protege to then Green Bay gunslinger and presumptive Hall of Famer Brett Favre, Rodgers began his career as nothing more than a backup and one who rarely saw action at that. His credentials as a college football quarterback however, indicated that he did indeed possess a future in the game, maybe even as a starter. Rodgers has since blown by those expectations and emerged as one of the legitimately elite starting quarterbacks in the NFL. His numbers are bordering on historical, dwarfing the majority of his contemporaries and besting even those who are on track for future enshrinements in Canton. Aaron Rodgers is on the shortlist of the elite quarterbacks that play in this league, and what’s scary to most teams is that he’s still got plenty of football left in him.
Don’t mistake this small market darling for being a one-man team however as they really do have talent at almost every position. Wideouts Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are some of the finest athletes in all of football while tight end Jermichael Finley may just be the best one at his position. These skill players have helped to form a formidable group around Rodgers and together they create a nightmare for teams’ opposing defenses. On defense, well the team is just as overflowing with talent as embodied by the likes of Clay Matthews and BJ Raji. This is an astoundingly deep and talented team, and their past victories have only served to make them even hungrier for yet another Super Bowl win.
The Green Bay Packers represent everything that is good about sports. They feature homegrown talent playing half its games in a beautiful and history-steeped stadium and they have some of the most passionate and knowledgeable fans in the entire league. Everything about this franchise seems to say storybook and their success is also included in that equation. They are Wisconsin’s finest and they simply want to do the hometown crowds proud. They head into this season as favorites to win their division, and another march into January and February may very well be in the cards.
