The Dueling Forces of Super Bowl XLVII

On February 3, 2013, the eyes of the sporting world will be placed solely upon the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event is a historic one as the championship of the football world will be claimed by either the Baltimore Ravens or by the San Francisco 49ers. Leading up to the grand contest were the stellar performance of the two teams both clinging to the hopes of being crowned champion, and both being coached by men named Harbaugh.

San Francisco 49ersThe playoff road taken by the Baltimore Ravens involved a treacherous trek through the AFC. The first part of the journey came when they had to defend home turf against the Indianapolis Colts. Inspired by the return of veteran linebacker Ray Lewis from injury, the Ravens trounced the Colts at home and advanced to the next round where a date with the Denver Broncos was forthcoming. Traveling to Denver and battling the roar of the home crowd, the Ravens hung tough with the Broncos for much of the game. Their efforts appeared futile as they were still trailing near the end of regulation. However, an otherworldly touchdown pass would save the Ravens in regulation and in overtime the club managed to get by ousting the Broncos at home and earning a match with the New England Patriots. In a rematch of a playoff game from last year, the Ravens showed that they were better. After managing to stay close in the first half, the team rallied in the second taking the win and booking themselves a trip to the Super Bowl. It was a triumphant moment for the team and one that was made possible by the coaching genius of one John Harbaugh. Interestingly enough, another coach by the name of Harbaugh was leading his men to victory in the other conference.

The San Francisco 49ers began their playoff journey at home. After earning a bye week that saved them from an extra game, the 49ers got the chance to play the Green Bay Packers for the right to advance to the NFC title game. The game quickly got out of hand for the Packers as San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick stormed through the Green Bay defenses and marched on into the record books with an impressive performance. The following week saw the 49ers paying a visit to Atlanta in search of their Super Bowl trip. It was a tense game throughout, with neither team relinquishing control but the 49ers, buoyed by the strength of their defense and the brilliance of their offense, managed to notch the win. Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the 49ers, learned later that his brother was also headed to the Super Bowl.

Two brothers now stand in each other’s way as they try to win the title that they have so fervently sought. John Harbaugh and his Ravens have fought tooth and nail for the title, while Jim Harbaugh and his 49ers have poured in a similar effort. Beloved brothers they may be, on February 3, 2013, only one of them can raise the Super Bowl trophy triumphantly.
