Ryder Cup is a golf tournament done twice a year between teams from United States of America and Europe. The venue for this competition interchanges between golf courses in America and Europe. For the tournament next year, it will be held in Medinah, Illinois. Ever since the first competition took place in 1927, the Americans have dominated it most of the time. For the 38 total matches that America was part of, they have been crowned champions 25 times or 66 percent of the time. They have incurred 11 losses and had two tied matches. In next year’s version of the said golf event, those who have already purchased Ryder Cup tickets can witness another epic battle between the two teams on September 25-30.
For the competition next year in Medinah Country Club, the team captains for both teams are Davis Love III (USA) and Jose Maria Olazabal (Europe). Love has been a professional golfer since 1985 and has participated in six Ryder Cups (1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004). Olazabal turned professional also in 1985 and participated in the competition seven times (1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1999, 2006).
The selection of the players that can be included in each team’s contingent depends on their criteria. For Team Europe, the five leading players on the Ryder Cup European Points List, five leading players on the Ryder Cup World Points List (golfers not qualified in the first criteria), and the two captain picks would be part of the delegation. For Team USA, the eight leading players on the Ryder Cup Points List and the four captain picks would be part of the American team.
Both teams can only field 12 golfers in the five-day tournament. The competition matches consist of eight foursomes, eight fourball, and 12 single matches. Each winner from the said games would get one point while those matches that end up tied after 18 holes, each team would get ½ point.
During the 2010 Ryder Cup, Team Europe emerged victorious edging out Team USA by just one point, 14 ½ – 13 ½. The previous tournament was done in Newport, Wales. In the past decade, the European golfers were able to dominate the Americas winning four out of the possible five matches.
After Illinois, the next Ryder Cup would be held in Scotland (2014), Minnesota (2016), France (2018) and Wisconsin (2020).
Some of the individual records in the Ryder Cup are: Most appearances on a team, Nick Faldo (Europe) with 11; Most points, Faldo with 25; Most Foursome points won, Bernhard Langer (Europe) with 11 ½; Youngest player, Sergio Garcia (Europe) played at the age 19 years and 258 days; and Oldest player, Ramon Floyd (USA) played at the age of 51 years and 20 days.
