Buffalo Sabres, Making A Late Push for the Playoffs

“It’s not over until the fat lady sings.” This is certainly what the Buffalo Sabresare proving in the entire National Hockey League with their late push for a playoff spot. Owners of Buffalo Sabres tickets certainly have their all-out support to their team for this playoff push. After spending most of the season outside of the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference, the Sabres moved into the eighth seed after defeating Washington Capitals on March 27.

Buffalo’s win versus the Capitals was a very crucial one since they are the two teams that are vying for the final playoff spot. Washington was clinging to that spot just last week but it did not help that they have lost five of their past seven games in their schedule. Buffalo, on the other hand, is winners of five straight games which boosted their chance of being in the post season. With five more games to go, the Sabres are looking to maintain their position in the standings to be able to appear in their third straight playoffs.

In the game against the Capitals, the Sabres showed great will in trouncing their opponent. Buffalo raced out to a 3-0 start before holding on to win 5-1. During that game, there was one moment that showed who wants the eighth seed more. That moment was a one-on-one puck battle, captain on captain, and was hockey’s oldest and truest form of will. In the second quarter of that game, Sabres winger Jason Pominiville stole the bouncing disk from Capitals’ Alexander Ovechkin during Washington’s power play. After stealing the puck, Ovechkin skated on a 2-on-1 break and then scored with 2:28 to go in the second period. That gave Buffalo a 4-1 lead which basically sealed the game for them and perhaps the eighth seed in the East.

On that single play, it showed how Washington has handled the puck all game, and even how their season is right now.

Even though the takeaway by Pominiville was the highlight of that game, one man stood out once again for Buffalo. Goalie Ryan Miller has continued his consistent defensive play as of late. In that game, the 2010 Olympic tournament MVP was able to save 44 shots. The high number of saves that Miller had on that game showed that he is back from his 2009-2010 form when he was awarded with the Vezina Trophy, the top award for goaltenders.

Miller was also named as one of the ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending March 25. He was named as the Second Star when he led the Sabres to four wins as well as posting 1.26 goals against average and .956 saves percentage.

Buffalo was in the 14th place of the Eastern Conference on February 17 but the Sabres players stepped up and find themselves on the 8th seed. From February 17 up to now, Buffalo has gone on to a 14-2-4 tear to the delight of Buffalo Sabres tickets owners.
