Chicago Blackhawks Contending For Another Stanley Cup

Western Conference leading Chicago Blackhawkslook to be at the top of the mountain again this season after failing to win back-to-back titles last season. Crowned champions during the 2009-2010 National Hockey League season, the boys from United Center failed to defend their title losing to the eventual conference champions Vancouver Canucks in the Conference Quarterfinals. Owners of Chicago Blackhawks tickets have been very supportive of their team this season and it shows in the standings.

The Blackhawks tops the entire Western Conference with a record of 28-13-6. They are also tied in the league for Points with 62 along with the New York Rangers. The Blackhawks have been very good at home but so-so on the road. Chicago is 18-5-4 at home while on the road, they are just 10-8-2. With 35 games to, majority of which is on the road, Chicago look to improve their road record to be able to prepare for the road games in the playoffs which are very critical.

Chicago is quite good offensively and defensively this season. Their total goals scored are tied with defending champions Boston Bruins at 156 and their goals against is at 135. In terms of goals per game, the 2010 champions are ranked third in the entire NHL at 3.2 while their goals against is ranked 17th in the league. Their power play percentage is at 18.8 which put them on the top 15, 11th overall. They are in the top five when it comes to shots per game averaging 32.4 through 47 games. Their power play goals on the other hand, are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the 8th spot with 31. When it comes to short-handed goals, Chicago is tied for third along with powerhouse teams Bruins and Rangers with six.

Their good statistical season as a team can be well attributed to the play of their players. Veteran Marian Hossa and fourth year player Jonathan Toews are both in the top 10 of total points scored. Hossa is tied for 6th with 49 while Toews is tied for 9th with 48. Hossa is also in the top 10 when it comes plus or minus with 23, placing him 8th in that category. Hossa barely missed the top 10 in points per game with 1.07. That statistic put him 11th in the entire league.

Another player who is coming up big for the Blackhawks this season is the team’s rookie Andre Shaw. Shaw was an unheralded draft pick by Chicago since he was picked in the 5th round, 139th overall. The 20-year-old Canadian rookie is becoming a fan favorite for the owners of Chicago Blackhawks tickets and is making some history. The eight games that Shaw has played are the most by any player who was drafted in the 5th round or later since 2003. His five goals through eight games is also turning heads in the league this season.
