In three of the four major sporting leagues in the United States, home court advantage is very vital for any playoff team. Playoff games in National Football League is played only once which makes home court advantage, somewhat, useless and the Super Bowl is played in a venue that is already set way before the post season. Having that extra game played at home is very crucial for any team who is looking to advance deep into the playoffs. During game 7 of any series, a team playing at home certainly has the advantage over the opponent. The Detroit Red Wingsis definitely doing its best playing at home to the delight of the owners of Detroit Red Wings tickets.

Detroit has really played well this season at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings won their first three games at home but it was followed by three straight losses, the last one coming against the Calgary Flames in November 3. After opening the season with a 3-3 record on their home ice, the Red Wings regrouped and they never looked back ever since. Their next 23 games at The Joe have been good for the Red Wings. Their latest victory over the San Jose Sharks on February 19 stretched their home winning streak to an NHL record 23 games. During this streak, they also broke a number of NHL home records. They broke the single-season home record of 20 wins with a win over the Dallas Stars on February 14. Their recent victory surpassed the 22 wins in row that the Boston Bruins set more than eight decades ago. The Bruins did it over two seasons.
The Red Wings is currently riding a six-game winning streak and all of those wins came during their six-game home stretch. Despite all the record that Detroit has set at home, there is one glaring weakness that the Red Wings need to improve, their road record. Playing away from their home ice, the Red Wings is just 15-15-1. Experts believe that when Detroit gets it going on the road plus their play at home, winning the Stanley Cup can become a reality. They have 10 more road games remaining on their schedule and winning more than half of that would help them hold on to that top spot in the standings.

For the season, Detroit is 5th overall in terms of goals per game (3.1) and goals against (2.3). Leading the charge once again for the Red Wings is nine-year veteran Pavel Datsyuk who dominated the latest National Hockey League Players’ Association poll. He was named the smartest player, most difficult to play against, hardest to get off the puck, cleanest to play against, and toughest forward to play against. He was also named as the toughest to stop by the goalies.
This season has been magical for the Red Wings. They are currently first in the entire National Hockey League with 84 points and if they continue doing what they do best, they are slated to win their 7th Presidents’ Trophies. The last time they win it was during the 2007-2008 season, also the last time that they won the Stanley Cup. Will there be a déjà vu for the 11-time champs?
